Call for competition of photo essays and short stories for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) Campaign 2011 PDF Print E-mail

With the aim of involving youth in the direct creation and design of the 16 Days Campaign 2011, UN WOMEN BiH Project Office announces the juried photo essay and short story competition open for all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina aged between 18 and 30. Up to 16 young people will be selected to actively take part and express their vision in this year’s national campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Chosen individuals will attend a two day workshop about gender based violence, photography and storytelling. After the workshop and in collaboration with the experts in photography and storytelling each of them will use their talent and creativity to develop one of the 16 pages of the 16 DAY eBook-Youth Say No to Violence! for 2011.

Each young girl or boy will be designing one of the sections of the eBook and the two best ones will, additionally, receive a grant to start working on their chosen compelling story in the area of ending GBV and present them during next year 16 Day Campaign (year 2012).

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) is an international campaign that takes place from the 25th November (International Day against Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) to the 10th December (International Human Rights Day) and symbolically links violence against women with human rights. The 16 Days Campaign has been used as an organizing strategy by individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

We need creative and open-minded young people to submit:

a) Mini photo essays (between 6 to 10 photographs), preferably related to GBV and VAWG, accompanied by description or artist statement, not longer than 1000 words. It can be previously published work or work in progress with written concept note.


b) Short story (fiction or real life story) related to GBV and VAWG issues, not longer than 1500 words.

We encourage out-of-the-box approach and we will pay attention to the most creative ideas and visions. The primary criteria in judging will be your ability to tell a great story, visual or written.

Submission Guidelines (photo essay):
• No more than ten digital photos in JPG format: maximum size 1920 pixels longer side, minimum 72DPI
• Each photograph should have author data and description not longer than 250 words digitally embedded in IPTC/XMP information. See if you are unsure how to do it. You can download and examine an example photo at
• Accompanying 500-1,000 word essay in DOC format in one of BiH official languages spoken in BiH
• Photos MUST be submitted in the order that they appear in the essay
• Please name photo submissions as follows: Firstname_Lastname01.jpg, Firstname_Lastnam0e2.jpg (i.e. John_Malkovich01.jpg, John_Malkovich02.jpg)
• We will not enter into any correspondence about entries or results.
• We cannot provide any feedback on individual entries.

Submission Guidelines (Short story)
• Stories should be from 500 to 1500 words in DOC format in one of official languages spoken in BiH
• Entries must be entirely your own work and may have been previously published
• One entry per person only. Subsequent entries, including revisions, will be omitted from the competition and will not be read.
• Entries submitted on behalf of somebody else will not be eligible.
• We will not enter into any correspondence about entries or results.
• We cannot provide any feedback on individual entries.

Authors own the copyright on their submitted works and do not transfer it to UN WOMEN. Those authors that are chosen for the workshop and campaign participation will grant UN WOMEN the use of submitted and produced materials in connection with 16 Dana 2011 Campaign and subsequent program activities throughout year 2012. In such uses, UN WOMEN will make copyright note containing author’s credentials. By submitting their work authors warrants that submitted work is original work created by them and agree to provide proof if requested by UNWOMEN.

Entry fee
There is no entry fee for this competition.
Travel and accommodation costs
Chosen authors who will participate at the workshop and live more that 40 km away from Sarajevo will overnight in Sarajevo and their travel costs will be reimbursed. Details will be negotiated on individual level.
